The Virginia Native Plant Society Potowmack Chapter has graciously invited all Master Naturalists and Tree Stewards to attend “The Plight of the American Chestnut”, Turns out we Master Naturalists, Tree Stewards and VNPS were all trying to book this program this winter so we are combining forces with one presentation.

Thursday, February 11, 7:30 PM at Green Springs Garden

4603 Green Spring Road
Alexandria, Virginia 22312

Cathy Mayes, President of the Virginia Chapter of the American Chestnut foundation will tell the role of the chestnut before the blight, the biology of the blight, the state of chestnut science today, and how citizen scientists can participate in the recovery.  In addition to her role with the American Chestnut Foundation, Ms. Mayes is Treasurer of the VNPS and is a certified Master Naturalist.

If you want to do some background reading ahead of time, I strongly recommend Susan Freinkel’s bookAmerican Chestnut, The Life, Death and Rebirth of a Perfect Tree. This is a very readable book and she does an excellent job of covering the complexity of this issue, including the controversy over the introduction of a hybridized chestnut tree.
