Ticks may still be active in the winter!

While mosquitoes are mostly dormant with temperatures below 50 degrees, certain ticks, like the black-legged (deer) tick, may stay active all winter. So, if you’re hiking or working in vegetated areas of your yard, take appropriate precautions. Click HERE for what to look for and do.

Upcoming Events and News

NVSWCD will accept orders for tree and shrub seedling beginning Feb 2nd. This popular sale provides low-cost native trees and shrubs for Fairfax County residents. Click HERE for details including plant descriptions, prices, and pickup information.

The latest Plant NOVA Natives newsletter  addresses various native grasses from mini to gigantic that can be used in variety of situations.

On days in which it’s better to just look outside than be there, click HERE for a nice discussion of the benefits of native plants for all types of wildlife during the winter.

Spring is coming! Plan to participate in the 2021 City Nature Challenge—April 30-May 3, 2021. Like 2020, the focus will be on individual or household groups collecting observations and submitting them to iNaturalist.  For information about City Nature Challenge, click: HERE.  To join a group, click HERE.

See Volunteer Opportunities for ongoing events for which you can provide help.
