A Summer Sparkle: Why Fireflies Need Our Help

When you think of summer nights as a kid, do you picture chasing fireflies?

I certainly do.

Growing up in rural Virginia, summer evenings meant running through the yard with a mason jar in hand, carefully recreating the “perfect” firefly habitat inside. We’d poke air holes in the lid, add a stick, a few leaves, maybe some grass, and watch in amazement as tiny lanterns blinked on and off against the glass. Even today, it’s impossible for me to think of summer without thinking of fireflies. They still evoke that same sense of wonder, fleeting beauty, and childhood magic.

While a group of fireflies has no official scientific collective noun, they are most commonly and poetically called a “sparkle” or a “glow”. As it turns out, these glowing beetles are far more than nostalgic icons of summer. They are important members of our ecosystems and remarkable ambassadors for conservation.

More Than Just Pretty Lights

Fireflies belong to the beetle family Lampyridae, with more than 2,400 species found around the world. During a visit to Cambodia a few years ago, I even took a boat excursion dedicated entirely to watching thousands of fireflies illuminate a riverside forest. The popularity of this event served as a reminder that these insects inspire wonder across cultures and continents.

Here in Northern Virginia, we’re most likely to encounter species within the genera Photinus, Photuris, and Pyractomena. The familiar “Big Dipper” firefly (Photinus pyralis, or the common eastern firefly) is probably the species many may remember from childhood, recognized by its distinctive J-shaped flash pattern.

One surprise for many people is that not all fireflies actually flash. Some species are active during the day and don’t glow as adults, while others, including glow-worms, don’t fly at all. Nearly all firefly larvae, however, produce a faint glow that warns predators they aren’t a tasty meal. Since the larval stage can last up to two years, these hidden juveniles spend far more of their lives beneath leaves and in the soil than they do lighting up our summer evenings.

The flashing adults we’re most familiar with are usually males searching for mates. Females often remain perched on grasses or low vegetation, answering with their own species-specific flashes. Every blink is part of a carefully choreographed conversation.

Fireflies are fascinating in other ways, too. Some species produce defensive chemicals called lucibufagins that make them unpalatable to predators. Even more remarkably, female Photuris fireflies obtain these protective compounds by preying on other firefly species, a strategy dubbed by scientists as “femme fatale” behavior.

Their remarkable ability to produce light has also benefited people. Firefly luciferase has become an invaluable tool in biomedical research, helping scientists study diseases such as HIV and Parkinson’s disease, detect blood clots, and advance cancer research. Fortunately, researchers now produce synthetic luciferase, eliminating the need to harvest fireflies for these purposes.

In agriculture applications, fireflies are used to keep pest populations in check, thereby reducing the need for insecticides. Firefly larvae also quietly provide another ecosystem service by feeding on slugs, snails, worms, and other soft-bodied invertebrates, helping naturally regulate garden pests. Fun fact: they use neurotoxins to paralyze their prey and then a digestive enzyme that liquefies their insides!

Tiny Beetles, Big Indicators

Fireflies are also excellent bioindicators. Because they are sensitive to habitat quality, soil moisture, water quality, and artificial light at night, healthy firefly populations often signal healthy ecosystems.

Unfortunately, many people have noticed that fireflies don’t seem quite as abundant as they once were. It’s not simply nostalgia.

Scientists believe habitat loss, urban development, pesticide use, changing climate conditions, and increasing light pollution are all contributing to declines. Artificial light at night (ALAN) is particularly problematic because it interferes with the flash signals fireflies use to find mates, disrupting reproduction even when suitable habitat remains.

Although researchers are still working to better understand population trends, we already know enough to take meaningful conservation action.

Sharing the Magic

On June 21st, Arlington families had the opportunity to experience that magic firsthand during the annual Firefly Festival at Fort C. F. Smith Park, hosted by Long Branch Nature Center with support from ARMN volunteers.

Throughout the evening, children and adults explored interactive stations, tested their knowledge with firefly trivia, created temporarily decorated “bug hotels,” learned about firefly life cycles, and joined guided walks through the park as dusk settled in. As the first flashes appeared among the grasses and trees, excitement spread from one family to the next. For many children, it was their first opportunity to see fireflies in the wild. For many adults, it was a chance to reconnect with a cherished childhood memory while learning how these remarkable beetles contribute to healthy ecosystems.

Events like these exemplify one of ARMN’s and the Nature Centers’ core missions: connecting people with nature through education. By helping visitors understand the science behind the spectacle, volunteers inspire stewardship that extends far beyond a single summer evening.

How You Can Help Fireflies

Fortunately, supporting fireflies doesn’t require a large property or extensive effort. Small changes can make a meaningful difference.

  • Leave the leaves. Leaving some leaf litter and natural plant debris in place helps retain soil moisture and provides shelter for larvae.
  • Plant NOVA Natives. Planting native groundcovers, shrubs, and trees supports the insects and invertebrates fireflies depend upon. A great place to learn about native plants in Northern Virginia and good choices for your spaces is: Plant NOVA Natives.
  • Add a water source. Adding a shallow water feature or maintaining damp areas allows larvae to thrive.
  • Don’t spray so the bugs can play. Avoiding broad-spectrum pesticides reduces harm to both fireflies and their prey.
  • Reduce light pollution. Turning off unnecessary lights or using motion sensors helps create darker nights where fireflies can successfully communicate and reproduce.

Become a Community Scientist

Local community science projects that allow anyone to contribute observations include Firefly Atlas and the Fireflyers International Network on iNaturalist. Every observation helps researchers build a clearer picture of where fireflies are thriving and where they may need additional conservation attention.

Fireflies have enchanted generations with their tiny lanterns, but their future depends on more than nostalgia. By protecting dark skies, restoring habitat, and sharing their story with others, we can help ensure that future generations experience the same magical summer evenings that so many of us remember.

After all, there’s still plenty of sparkle, or perhaps glow, left to protect.
